Vertical plant wall, how do you do that?

Many plants that are sold as houseplants are in principle also suitable for use in a vertical wall. Which plants are chosen for which wall and in what combination depends on the following factors, among others:

    • Location of the wall
    • A lot or little light
    • The ambient temperature
    • System and method of watering
    • The humidity of the wall
    • The size of the wall

    Location of the wall

The chosen plants must be able to grow under the conditions of the wall. Indoors, light is often the limiting factor. Because the proportion of plant families that thrive well in low-light conditions is small, the plant choice for the wall is greater when supplementary lighting is used. Even walls close to a window usually need supplementary lighting for this reason.

    Size of the wall

When working with a large wall, there will be differences in the mentioned conditions within the wall. For example, plants at the top of the wall often get more light. Depending on the type of irrigation system, the plants lower on the wall often get more water. At the top, the wall can even dry out between waterings.

    Vertical wall systems

Many systems for green walls are conceivable, and many systems are patented. The first modern system was conceived by Stanley Hart White. He patented it in 1935, and the system consisted of stackable flower pots for outdoors. Patrick Blanc from France was the first to develop systems for indoors. He did this based on his knowledge of plants and ecosystems in tropical areas. He later applied his system outdoors as well, using plants from temperate zones.

The plants in a green wall can be grown on different media. Rock wool, clay pebbles, soil mixes, coconut substrates, and mats can be used for this. Connect the system to a nutrient reservoir to automatically regulate watering.

    Maintenance

A good design and good maintenance can prevent failures. It also helps if the growth conditions of the plants are on the border of sub-optimal, causing the plants to grow less vigorously and be more resistant to fluctuations. Plucking leaves and pruning plants that threaten to become too large are also part of standard maintenance and must be performed every 3 months. This keeps the wall looking beautiful and allows it to last for years.

    • Shake well before use. Add 2 to 4 ml of Greenwall special per liter of water.
    • Do not use other fertilizers, such as fertilizer pellets, simultaneously in the root environment of your plants.
    • For green walls connected to a nutrient reservoir, it is advisable to regularly replace the full contents of the reservoir—at least once every two weeks. This is to ensure that the plants receive the correct nutrients.
